Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is a royal palace and one of the principal residences of the British sovereign. Queen Elizabeth and her family spend some weekends here. Her Majesty uses it for state and private entertaining. Windsor Castle , Buckingham Palace and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh are the official residences of the royal family, while Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle are their private homes.

The castle is situated in Windsor, in Berkshire, the English county. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world. William the Conqueror also lived here many, many years back. Since then, the royal family has continuously used it.

The castle’s floor area is about 484,000 square feet. Most of the Kings and Queens of England and Great Britain have had a say in the evolution of this gigantic castle. The British history has plenty of references to the Windsor Castle, which has been the royal family’s home and fortress, and sometimes even their prison, for centuries. The history of the castle and the Royalty has been closely linked. Each reigning royal has made additions and expansions or reconstructions when needed and as preferred by them.

The Round Tower is a landmark of the castle. However, it is not cylindrical but irregular. It is on a man-made hill and the shape is determined by the hill. The Round Tower divides the castle into two sections known as wards. The lower ward is home to St George’s chapel while the upper ward contains the Royal apartments and the formal state rooms, which include St George’s hall, a vast room which has a ceiling decorated with the coat of arms and present members of the Order of the Garter.

There is a regular change of guards, which form an attraction for visitors. The guards stand stiffly for hours, not moving a single muscle. Each marches from his position during the change of guards and it is a solemn occasion. The Windsor Castle is open for public viewing during certain times, mainly when the royal family is not in residence.

Visiting rights to the Windsor Castle are restricted and if you wish to take a tour around the castle, you need to make reservations with a tour service. Make sure you stay at a nearby Slough hotel and arrive early for the tour. Check out the Copthorne Hotel Slough Windsor for some quite relaxation and modern comfort during your hotel stay.
