Practice the Habit of Action
“Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it,” observed David Starr Jordan. Most of know are very well aware of what we need to do in order to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling fruitful lives. The real problem with most of us is that we don’t do what we know. We have all heard many motivational / inspirational speakers say, “Knowledge is power.” Knowledge is not power. Knowledge is only potential power. It transforms itself into actual power the moment you decisively act on it.
The mark of a strong character lies not in doing what is fun to do or what is easy to do. The sign of deep moral authority appears in the individual who consistently does what he ought to be doing rather than what he feels like doing. A person of true character spends his days doing that which is the right thing to do. Rather than watching spending a lot of time in watching television after an exhausting day at work, he has the courage to get up off the couch and read to his kids. Instead of sleeping in on those cold winter mornings, the person decides to do exercise which requires a lot of courage and self discipline. And since action is a habit, the more positive actions you take, the more you will feel like taking.
And too often, we spend lot of our time and days waiting for the ideal path to appear in front of us. We forget the paths are made by walking, not waiting. Dreaming is great and fine. But thinking big thoughts alone will not build a business, pay your bills or make you into the person you know in your heart you can be.
In the words of Thomas Carlyle, “The end of man is an action and not a thought, though it were the noblest.” The smallest of actions is always better than the boldest of intentions.
Key Points.
1. Be a person who is a doer. Be an “activationist.”
2. Don’t wait until conditions are perfect. They never will be. Expect future obstacles and difficulties and solve them as they arise.
3. Remember ideas along won’t bring success. Ideas have value only when you act upon them.
4. Use action to cure fear and gain confidence. Do what you fear and fear disappears. Just try and see.
5. Start your mental engine mechanically. Don’t wait for the spirit to move you. Take action, dig in, and you move the spirit.
6. Think in terms of now. Tomorrow, next week, later and similar words are synonymous with the failure word never, be an “I’m starting right now” kind of person.
7. Get down to business –pronto. Don’t waste time getting ready to act. Start acting instead.
8. Seize the initiative. Be a crusader. Pick up the ball and run. Be a volunteer. Show that you have the ability and ambition to do.
