JOB SATISFACTION OF GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES
(A CASE STUDY ON HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT, SALEM DIVISION)
Job satisfaction often is a collection of attitudes about specific factors of the job. Employees can be satisfied with some elements of the job while simultaneously dissatisfied with others. Moreover, job satisfaction is a life satisfaction.
Statement of the Problem
The study on job satisfaction helps to know their preference and problem of the employees. Mainly five factors influenced job satisfaction opportunity, leadership pay, promotion and fair rewards. When these five factors were high. Job satisfaction was high in all organization. When these five factors were low. Job satisfaction is low. So the needs of the employees are carefully studied by conducting survey on job satisfaction towards highways department. Salem (Division) This study is very useful and helpful to know the problem faced by the employees and also know the employee requirements.
Scope of the Study
The study may be beneficial both for the department and the employees. Department can benefit by knowing the employees. Department can benefit by knowing the employees level of satisfaction. For the employees indirectly helps them to convey their expectations regarding the job security, safety appliances. Grievance committee etc to the department. This project highlights the scope for future improvement in above requirements provided to the employees.
Objectives
· To identify the satisfaction level of the employees on their job
· To Measure the employees level of satisfaction on their pay
· To Measure the level of relationship that exists between the co-workers
· To identify the factors influencing job satisfaction in the sample unit.
· To offer suggestions and recommendations for improving job satisfaction in the department.
Methodology
The present study is an empirical one and field method is used for collection of required data. The enquiry covered a sample of 150 employees selected in Salem (Division) the personal interview technique was employed to collect the relevant from the selected employees.
Sampling Technique
The total population is initially divided into areas in Salem and around Salem. Using convenience sample technique the sample units were selected for the study and the information’s were collected from them.
Sampling Unit
The sampling unit for the study consists of all cadres of employees in Highways department, Salem Division.
Limitation
§ An employee has fear to reveal the negative aspects.
§ The study is applicable only to highways department Salem (Division) and not to any other similar division of highways.
§ Due to scarcity of time and considering the resource available, the study was limited to 150 respondents.
§ The information collected is based on the perception of the respondents.
Analysis and interpretation
In my study of this research I have used both primary and secondary data. In this article mainly focused with table is level of satisfaction of the employees in their job.

From the above table 74.0% of the respondents are satisfied with their job, 26.0% of the employees are not satisfied with their job.
Findings
§ Employees level of satisfaction on their job is satisfactory
§ Pay and relationship of co- worker level is moderate in the department.
Suggestions
§ Provide awareness board, red flags in the road, it is helpful for the public to know, road work in the process.
§ More number of vacancies in the department, Government takes necessary steps to fill up the vacancies; it will reduce the work to sub staffs.
§ First aid safety appliances cannot be provided to the employees, it is major draw back for the department; Government takes necessary steps to eradicate the problem of the workers.
Conclusion
The highways department is well organised in many aspects. The workers are well experience in their field. Generally the job satisfaction level is good. Rules and regulation are maintained promptly. The relationship of workers between superiors and colleagues is satisfactory. If highways department correct all the few problem area means the overall job satisfaction level will be improved and this will create good impact on the department as a whole in aspects.
