Are you a manager or supervisor who's worried about workplace violence? I understand your concern.
Everyday, managers are injured and killed from a workplace violence attack. In fact, workplace violence is the #1 cause of job-related deaths for managers! Here are some life-saving steps that you can take to avoid being attacked by an aggressive employee and becoming the victim of violence in the workplace!
1) Know more than your employee's names. By knowing a little about what's going on in the lives of your workers, you can make note of changes or incidents which may create stress, anxiety, and anger. Most workplace violence attacks perpetrated by an aggressive employee, whether on a manager or fellow employee, come with warning signs and can be met with preventative action before it becomes too late.
2) Be aware of sudden changes. Again, violence doesn't happen in a vacuum and employees don't just suddenly "snap." There are almost always warning signs such as a change in mood, focus, productivity level, etc. While not everything translates to a warning sign for impending workplace violence attack, sudden shifts in personality traits and the like can be an early warning sign that you should take some sort of action.
3) Control your communications. Just as violence does not "come out of nowhere," aggressive employees don't just target "anyone." Victims often give off the necessary cues and signals that tells an attacker that he or she is easy prey. Or, based on personal history, your actions and the way that you have communicated with the employee may be the catalyst for a personal attack. While you shouldn't be required to placate your people - you should avoid the use of cocky, condescending, or demeaning speech.
Remember, our body language and vocal tone make up a full 85% or more of our communications with others. That means that it's always more of "how" you say something, than it is the words you use to say it.
By being more aware of our people and our actions, we can often prevent violence long before it has a chance to touch us.
