By now, most Delhiites are familiar with the Flea Market at Select City Walk. For those who don’t know the flea market is a temporary market that is put up in the open every Wednesday. Though the concept of an open market is nothing new in Delhi, after all there are markets like Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar etc what makes the flea market special is its uniqueness.
Most of the kiosks have designer products and it is the owners who sell it. This makes shopping here a pleasure. People who come to shop here are professionals or businessperson, they want to shop in a place that is swanky and the people behind the counter are educated. The Flea Market has this and much more. The fun of shopping here is enhanced during festivals. The fact that Diwali is almost round the corner, the market has some out of the box ideas for the customers. Take for example coasters and tablemats made of acrylic. With gold/silver thread intricately woven into the material and a border, again in gold or silver to compliment it, the effect is stunning. Prices at Rs 200 and Rs 250 for the mats and Rs 200 for six coasters, it is a great gift to give this Diwali.
There can be no Diwali with lights. The traditional diyas have been replaced with candles. There are floating candles, candles in a jar, just candles and decorative candles. The candles this have added a touch of the festival. The coloured glass jars or containers have motifs of Ganesha, Om etc. When the candle is lit inside the motif is clearly seen giving a haloed look. Clothes and jewellery are a woman’s best friends. No kiosk is empty that is selling these items. From college students to young ladies to elderly women, these kiosks have something for each. Salwar-kurtas with embroidery and zari work is the trend this season. Then there are short kurtis. Floral prints and abstract designs are the flavour for college going students.
One can’t have clothes and not have matching tote bags to go with them. With varied hues of red, yellow, blue, green and even purple, the flea market has it all. And then there are the usual chappals and sandals. Considering that most of the things in this market scream ‘designer’, the footwear sections are a big disappointment. Nothing here is what one can’t get in any of the markets like Lajpat Nagar. Most of the kiosks will be back, so there is a chance for you to pick up a few things this Diwali and wow your friends.
