We're sure that you've noticed the rein of viruses dashing around the internet. But, viruses are available through other channels; USB connectors, Wi-Fi, firewire ports, and music downloads from free shareware. All of these free additions and typical hardware can create a vulnerability that allows outside hackers to attack your PC. We know how it feels to watch your PC shut off unexpectedly, little skull pictures pop up, and hard drives pop open without warning. Some of these signs are unkind, scary, and mean damage exists on your PC. If you'd like to protect your PC from viruses, it's vital to take necessary precautions to keep your PC safe.
Keep Windows Updates Current
Windows Updates are an important addition to protect your PC from viruses. By keeping the database, definitions, and new service packs up to date, you encourage protection from spyware and adware. The viruses floating around the web continue to emerge in email offers, free sign ups and the usual internet marketing attempts from SPAM online. You can counter all of these issues by keeping your Windows Updates current to remove these viruses from reaching sensitive data on your PC.
Use Proper Permissions on Web Browsers
Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 6 or higher and Opera offer extensive protection on their web browsers. You can access the definitions in each by visiting their host websites for updates, protection procedures, extensions, and new downloads available to increase security for web surfing. It’s relatively simple to block certain websites your family can visit; go to Internet Explorer’s Security > Internet Options > Security to choose the security level during web browsing.
Install and Update Personal Firewalls
Personal firewalls are important because they manage the outgoing and incoming traffic on your network. If you’re children or spouse visit websites unprotected, you may experience spyware and adware attacks on your system. Microsoft Windows Vista offers an internal firewall in its system (still in Beta) that protects the traffic flow based on permissions established by the owner. If you’re using Windows XP or an earlier version of Windows, you may have to install a third party personal firewall available online.
Enable automatic updates to stay in tune with the latest developments online. Majority of personal firewalls have an instant backup of all definitions of new Trojans, spyware, and other viruses surfacing the web. Protect your personal data from hackers by installing one as soon as you purchase a PC or update the current personal firewall used for best protection.
Hide Files
If you’re interested in protecting sensitive data, hide files that should remain off limits to anyone in your network. To encrypt files, visit the folder or file in which you want to encrypt. Right click the file or folder than stroll down to Properties, double-click to open. After you notice the Properties, you will notice two options at the bottom of the pop up window for Attributes – Read Only and Hidden. Click on Hidden to hide the information from wonderers in your network.
All of these tips can do different levels of protection to your PC from viruses and intruders. You can use all of the tips or a few, dependent upon your level of security in your network.
