Die Geschichte von Jaguar geht bis in die ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts zurück und ist vor allem die Geschichte eines einzelnen Mannes. 1920 bringt der Zufall den neunzehnjährigen William Lyons mit dem Seitenwagenbauer William Walmsey in Blackpool (England) zusammen. Gemeinsam gründen die beiden die Swallow Sidecar Company. Hierbei ergänzen sich von Anfang an Lyons Geschäftstüchtigkeit und Walmseys auserordentlicher Technikverstand.
Das Unternehmen beschränkte sich am Anfang auf die Anfertigung von Spezialkarossen, die vor allem auf eines ausgerichtet waren: Schnelligkeit. Der rennsportbegeisterte Lyons war verantwortlich für die Optimierungen bestehender Fahrzeuge, wie beispielsweise beim Austin Seven, Morris Cowles oder Fiat 509.
Doch lange waren die beiden Idealisten mit der reinen Optimierung bestehender Fahrzeuge nicht zufrieden und so stellten sie auf der Londoner Motor Show im Jahr 1931 ihre ersten eigenen Modelle vor. Der SS 1 und SS 2 erregten sowohl mit ihrem Design als auch durch die hervorragenden Fahreigenschaften große
Bewunderung unter dem Publikum. Der Name Jaguar allerdings erschien erst 1935 in Verbindung mit den Fahrzeugen und entstand bei der Einführung einer neuen Sportwagenserie der Swallow Sidecar Company.
Um Jaguar als Luxusmarke zu etablieren, forschten die Fahrzeugbauer in den 40er Jahren an dem Projekt XK – und als Ergebnis wurde bereits 1948 der XK 120 vorgestellt. Der hervorragende Ruf von Jaguar Fahrzeugen in der Automobilwelt war damit endgültig begründet. Die Ziffer 120 im Namen stand hierbei für eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 120 Meilen pro Stunde.
Was zunächst unmöglich schien, wurde in Fahrtests sogar noch überschritten und erste Fahrversuche bestätigten dem XK 120 eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 126 Meilen in der Stunde.
Um auch den amerikanischen Limousinenmarkt zu erobern, wurde 1950 der MK VII vorgestellt, welcher dem Unternehmen binnen weniger Wochen ein Bestellvolumen von mehr als 30 Millionen britischen Pfund bescherte und damit finanzielle Flexibilität für weitere innovative Entwicklungen ermöglichte. So entstand im Sportwagenbereich im Jahr 1954 der XK 140 (190 Meilen/Stunde), der den XK 120 erfolgreich ablöste.
