In the past, 4x4 vehicles were the sort of vehicle you’d expect to find on a farm, popular with farmers and city types that have acres of countryside to whizz around in.

Nowadays, it’s not unusual to see these large vehicles on the roads of Britain. Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have become popular for families, thanks largely to their large and flexible space, as well as the increased road visibility thanks to a high-driving position.

And with more manufacturers attempting to cater for the growing trend, the SUV market is seeing a steady increase – meaning more choice for the customer, be they a soccer player or a ‘soccer mom’.

But when it comes to car insurance, SUV owners could find themselves with large premiums because of a large vehicle when searching for an affordable car insurance quote.

Because SUVs are often large, heavy and expensive, owners can be expected to pay higher premiums on their car insurance.

For owners who use their 4x4s off the road, it is advisable to research quotes from a variety of providers. Some motor insurance policies will offer off-road cover and liability cover for trailer transport in the price.

As with many types of car insurance, many factors will feature in determining the cost of your car insurance premium – including age, driving experience and no claims bonus history.

It is advisable to look into getting this added extra included on your policy; otherwise the insurance status of your vehicle when off road can be open to question.
