Deductibles are nearly always calendar year, meaning they start on January 1, of any year.
Once you pay your deductible, you get better benefits, like 80% coverage for the rest of the year, where you were paying 100% for services before the deductible, you would only pay 20% for services after.
Let's use Dental as an example.
Say you were using the popular plan TONIKTONIK from Anthem Blue Cross, which includes a Dental benefit, up to $500 worth per calendar year.
There is a $25 deductible.
Diagnostic and Preventive services (Exams and Cleanings) are not subject to the Deductible. So you would basically get those services for free, but they do reduce your $500 benefit (if you had a $100 office visit, you would have $400 worth of benefits left for that calendar year).
But what if you have a cavity? That is subject to the deductible.
If you need a cavity filled you would pay the first $25 (the deductible) once per year, and 20% of the bills all year until TONIK has paid $500 for you.
Another part of managing your health benefits is to try to get the deductible in early in the year, not late in the year. So if a dentist wanted to fill your cavity in December, you should ask if you could wait until January because if you pay the deductible in December, another one is due just 30 days later!
This is all pretty simple when you understand that you have one deductible per year, and it's a calendar year (in most cases).
Another interesting insurance concept is the "Maximum Out Of Pocket", nsurance professionals often shorten this to "M.O.P" which limits your liability to pay. It also is calendar year, and it says that you pay your share, say 20%, but only up to a certain point.
If you had a health plan with a $1500 deductible, and 20% share after that, you could pay up to $3200 on a $10,000 hospital stay.
$1500 deductible and $1700 your 20% of the remainder, totals $3200.
But what if the bill is a Million dollars?
Then you have Maximum Out of Pocket, usually something like $5,000, which you pay. At that point you are not required to pay any more of the cost, regardless of the amount, even up to your policy maximum (usually millions on a health plan).
You don't have to pay if you have another accident or illness later in the year either. Once you have paid the calendar year M.O.P. you should be able to be as sick or injured as you like for free!
There are, of course, some cautions you must take. Like using providers that accept your insurance, and getting pre-authorization when required. Call your agent or insurance company for help.
