HGV insurance

The purpose of vehicle insurance is to provide protection to the insurer and other road users to cover them from damages as a result of accidents, vandalism, fire and other damages. Each vehicle has its own special insurance, depending on the type and make of the vehicle.

Most insurance companies selling HGV insurance offers online services to customers to enable them to obtain competitive packages. Also, customers are able to get a quote instantly or can request for an insurance broker to call them to discuss their budget, needs and requirements. With the availability of online services, customers can sign up instantly and immediately arrange for a monthly instalment.

The main HGV insurance offered by all  insurance companies are the Public Liability and Employers Liability, both of which are the most important to have. Public Liability insurance provides protection against damages to your business by a member of public, but it only covers employers and not for employees. Employers Liability will provide coverage in case of accident caused on or off site. Any other injuries caused by accident on the road are covered separately by employer’s motor insurance.

Other HGV insurance offered is the haulage exchange, which allows the employer to subcontract their loading to others. Insurance companies realised that this is a growing risk because of many cases of items went missing while on transport, destroyed by road accidents, fire and the goods get stolen. Thus, this type of insurance is more expensive, but it can also provide a comprehensive coverage to lorry or van goods that are being transported.

However, for a complex superstore in which HGV are owned by different business unit, HGV insurance is not applicable to this situation. Employers of that business would need to purchase their own HGV insurance. It has to be noted that HGV insurance is applicable for vehicles with combined weight of at least 7.5 tonnes, and it provides coverage to the insurers, its driver and their customer.

In considering purchase of HGV insurance, you should get advice from an insurance broker, who will be able to get the best deal based on your business needs, requirements and the type of suitable insurance.
