Homeowner’s insurance is one of the most important insurance policies. However, assessing if it provides sufficient coverage to safeguard against certain types of losses requires a thorough assessment of numerous factors.
The first thing to do is to systematically review what your insurance policy covers and what it doesn’t. Many people buy a homeowner’s insurance without really knowing what it covers. Hence, when a specific peril arises that is not covered by the policy they realize that they had never really paid attention to their insurance coverage. For instance, standard homeowner’s insurance policies cover against losses from fire, smoke, explosion, lightning, hail, tornado, windstorm, vandalism, and theft. If damages from an earthquake or a flood occur, they won’t be covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy. Such damages are rather covered by a comprehensive homeowner’s insurance policy. Therefore, consulting an insurance professional and reviewing your insurance policy, particularly if you live in an area prone to natural disasters, is a wise thing to do in order to ensure proper coverage.
Another consideration is the replacement cost of the property. Most likely after damage, the property will need minor or major repairs. Replacement cost policies cover the cost of repairs using similar quality materials up to the cost covered by the policy. However, there are also the guaranteed replacement cost policies that cover the entire repairing costs, even if they exceed the policy limits. Therefore, comparing the replacement cost policies to the guaranteed replacement cost policies can protect a homeowner from paying additional repairing costs that can be covered by the policy.
A third consideration refers to the replacement cost of your possessions. Replacement cost policies calculate the replacement cost of your possessions based on current value up to the cost covered by the policy. However, there are also the actual cash value policies that deduct any accumulated depreciation from the replacement costs of the damaged or destroyed assets before covering the claim. Therefore, comparing the replacement cost policies and the actual cash value policies that take into consideration the value of the item at the time of the damage is a wise thing to do. Particularly, if there are expensive items, such as jewelry, coins collections, stamp collections, electronics, or boats, standard homeowner’s insurance policies limit coverage for these items. Therefore, a homeowner should make should to mention any expensive item and prove their value with a purchase receipt or invoice when signing for a new insurance policy or reviewing an existing one.
Homeowner’s insurance policy covers also living expenses that include hotel accommodation expenses, restaurant expenses, and laundry services when the property has to be repaired and homeowners have to live in a hotel. The policy normally states the length and the amount of coverage.
Overall, having the right amount of homeowner’s insurance provides adequate coverage against losses that would have to be paid out of your pocket. Therefore, reviewing your homeowner’s insurance policy will safeguard all the money you have paid towards your insurance and will ensure that you have adequate coverage to protect your property and possessions.
