Insurance for the Poor - The Benefits of Medecaid

Affordable insurance has never been a more contentious and widely debated subject, both among US policy makers, lobby groups and the general public. Many people receive insurance-particularly healthcare insurance-as a part of their employment package, but where does this leave the less fortunate-and the unemployed in particular?

It is estimated that there are perhaps as many as 40 million Americans without any-or at least adequate-health insurance, pointing to a real vacuum and inequality of provision.

Fortunately, there are state and federally funded provisions and programmes aimed specifically at those on low-incomes and the unemployed, designed to provide an adequate and affordable level of insurance provision.

So what are the benefits of such programmes-especially to those that might fear entanglements with state programmes and the interminable form-filling and rigid bureaucracy that many associate them with?

Well, to take the first concern, vis-a-vis form-filling, the good news is that, for programmes such as Medicaid, applicants will not be faced with reams of endless paperwork and tiresome written statements. The application itself is actually filed by a caseworker, who meets with the applicant in order to assess eligibility for the programme and to inform the applicant about the documentation they will need to produce in order for eligibility to be assessed. Eligibility criteria varies between states, but priority is with low-income families-especially those with dependant children. Pregnant women with children are also a priority group.

Although the names of such programmes will vary depending on which state you reside in, Medicaid is perhaps the best-known, as has a number of benefits. For such state-run programmes to qualify to receive federal funding, they must offer aspects of cover. Such services usually include home healthcare services, in and out-patient hospital services, X-rays and paediatric services.

Recipients also need not worry about otherwise expensive doctor's visits or prescription drugs. Such provisions will either incur no charge at all, or a minimal cost. Coverage can also be provided retroactively to take into account a 3-month period prior to approval for coverage.
