Men Pay Significantly More for Car Insurance than Women

New research bouncing around the insurance industry has stated that men are paying higher car insurance costs than the opposite sex. According to a comparison website, men pay 71% more for motor insurance cover than women do.

Just over six million car insurance quotes during the year ending June 2009 were analysed. It was found that the average car insurance premium for a man is some £386 more than a woman, standing at £886 compared to £517.

As Steve Sweeney comments; ‘Men have historically had to pay higher motor premiums than women and this is reflected in the different prices insurers charge for male and female drivers.  Young male motorists have it hard, the study found, as 18 year-old males pay a whopping £1081 more than a female motorist born in the same year.

It is universally acceptable across the insurance industry that women are viewed as safer and slower drivers and this is the reasoning behind their car insurance rates being cheaper. Interestingly, women’s car insurance premiums also decrease in price the older they get but at a much faster rate than it does for males.

The older men and women get, the higher the reductions in price for motor insurance quotes.  The study also found out that men in their twenties pay on average of £1004 a year, 112% more than the average man in his thirties, who will normally pay around £473.

Meanwhile, a woman in her forties will pay £260 on average compared with £598 for a woman in her twenties.
