The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 in New South Wales contain provisions that guarantee protection of health, safety and welfare of the people at work. Employers and employees alike have their own sets of responsibilities in looking after the workplace health and safety.
Employers must maintain all places of work are in safe condition and that there are no risks to health. Safe entrances and exits is one thing. Proper and safe handling of plants or other substances related to the work field is another. Work procedures should not pose threats of any sort to employees that would comply with those. Workplace safety trainings should also be given along with the proper supervision to warrant the health and safety of employees. Workplace safety services and other facilities that aids in keeping employee’s welfares safe should be sufficient. Risk assessment should be conducted on a regular basis to make sure that all possible risks are anticipated and accounted for.
Employers must not demand payment from employees for anything that is done or provided to in order to comply with this act.
Employees on the other hand also have a hand in making all these successful. They must not do anything that might bring harm to the workplace or co-employees. They should not refuse reasonable requests and not hinder the efforts of giving aid or prevention of risks to a certain person or the workplace in general. They should also put to use all that they have learned in the safety trainings provided by the company.
In order to maintain and ensure workplace health and safety, employers and employees must be united. Cooperation of both parties is crucial in its success.
