What is Pet Insurance?
It is hard enough if your pet gets sick, but getting a huge bill posted to you for the full cost of the treatment can be very stressful. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance is there to help protect you from unanticipated vets' bills which can run into the thousands very easily.
What types of Pet Insurance are there?
Pet health insurance comes in a number of forms; however these are normally grouped into three distinct types, which are as follows: Annual cover, Individual condition cover and Lifelong cover.
Annual cover: This usually works out to be the cheapest of the three policies, but can also be the least flexible. Annual cover covers the cost of treatments for illness, injury and disease for up to 12 months starting when the policy is purchased. If your pets’ injury/illness last longer than a year then the cover will end. Also some insurance policies have a set number of times that treatment can be undertaken.
Individual condition: Lets you claim up to a certain amount for each illness. A long-term condition may well go over this limit. There is no time limit on claims as long as premiums are up to date.
Lifelong cover: This does exactly what it says on the tin. Lifelong cover covers for the whole duration of your pets’ life. This type of policy is renewed on an annual basis and covers for a condition no matter how long it lasts. The only limitation with this policy is that there is usually a cap on the total amount of treatment that can be claimed each year. This figure can vary depending on the type of animal you are wishing to insure, the age of the animal and of course the insurance company you buy the policy from.
