St Patrick’s Day is becoming an event to rival the great carnivals around the world and not just in the St Paddy’s Irish homeland. In cities with large Irish populations all over the globe it is celebrated with more fervour and excitement every year.

It’s the perfect time to book a short trip and join the party. Before you go though, remember to book your travel insurance and make sure you find the best deal.

Check the price before you pay for a single trip policy. If you’re planning another trip or two this year, perhaps another city break and a longer summer holiday, a year-long policy will almost certainly be cheaper in the long run, according to Sophie Neary, product director for BeatThatQuote.com.

"Make sure you’re getting the best travel insurance deal by comparing the price of single trip insurance and annual travel cover. If you take two trips a year or more, you’re almost certain to save money by booking annual cover.

"It is easy to do, just compare prices in moments using the BeatThatQuote.com service to find the cheapest travel insurance. For example, a couple paying for a five-day trip and a two week holiday to the US will pay almost exactly the same for annual travel cover.

"By taking out annual insurance, cover on your next trip will be completely free. Annual cover also gives you peace of mind and cuts out some of the hassle of organising overseas travel."

Once you’ve sorted your annual travel insurance it’s just a question of deciding which St Paddy’s party to crash.

The US hosts some of the wildest and most popular celebrations and parades. In New York they have been celebrating St Patrick’s Day for almost 250 years, attracting around 150,000 marchers in the parades and many more who come to watch and join the party.

Other cities, such as Boston and Chicago, also join in. In Chicago they even turn the river green in celebration of the Emerald Isle’s patron saint (just how they do this is a closely guarded secret but it is said to involve some industrial dye and a helpful leprechaun).

The daddy of all the celebrations takes place in Ireland, the home of St Patrick, where the locals now venerate their Patron in what has become a four-day long knees up. More than a million people join in.

Events will take place all over Ireland, the biggest in the capital Dublin, which will host parades, marches, choirs, the band Clannad in concert, a docklands light show and funfairs.

But wherever you decide to go this year you’ll be sure to find a warm welcome and a cool pint of Guinness. Cheers. Or as they say in Ireland Sláinte!
