What makes you unique?
The genetic makeup of every person is uniquely different. Thus, the ideal amount of nutritional intake and the diet differs from person to person. Knowing your body and understanding its uniqueness is the first step to develop the most healthy nutritional program for your body.
Body Mass Index
The primary way to determine your nutritional needs can be derived from the ratio of your body mass to your fat mass. This is called the Body Mass Index (BMI) . The BMI calculator compares the weight of the body with the height, thereby accounting for the differences in body composition. This index indicates whether you are obese, overweight, normal or underweight. A healthy BMI score is between 20 and 25. A score below 20 indicates that you may be underweight; a value above 25 indicates that you may be overweight.
Basal Metabolic Rate
Another important determinant is your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). The BMR calculator calculates the number of calories you would burn if you stayed in bed all day. If you've noticed that every year, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and stay slim, you've also learnt that your BMR decreases as you age. Likewise, depriving yourself of food in hopes of losing weight also decreases your BMR. However, a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise can increase your BMR, improving your health and fitness when your body's ability to burn energy gradually slows down.
Your unique nutritional need
The BMI helps you determine the intake of the three primary ingredients - proteins, fats and carbohydrates. However, how your metabolism reacts and handles the processing of these ingredients is determined by the BMR.
Thus, both these tools, along with a constant monitoring of cholesterol level and blood pressure, work hand in hand to determine your unique nutritional health.
After knowing the correct ratios and measurements, develop and implement a nutritional program that dictates your eating needs, exercise regime, vitamins and supplements. Seek help of a doctor or a dietitian if needed . The net result will be a positive increase in your overall health and fitness levels.
