One of the preliminary steps in the patent process is the patent search. This process typically costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and does not come with any guarantees. And in some cases, the process can take weeks to months. In this article I will show you how to perform your own patent search like the pros. That way, you will save money and speed up the monetization process.
First, you should go to a relatively new site called Google Patents. Here, you can search through issued patents and pending published patent applications. One of the nice features of Google Patents is the fact that you can pull down pdf's of the actual patents: drawings and all. Pulling down pdf's of the patents in an easy manner is not available through the USPTO without a special fee.
While you are on Google Patents, you should just enter in all the terms you can think of which are related to your invention. If you happen to know other pertinent information like competing patent numbers, inventors, and the like, you can enter those in too.
If you still need more information you can then venture over to the USPTO Patent search database. Once there, I want you to click on the issued patents button and dial back the date to the 1790. Go ahead and start off with the quick search. Enter in your terms and use the title search first. After you are done with the title search, go ahead and do a search through the abstracts. After abstracts, you should make your way to the specifications/descriptions search. And after that you can go to the claims and other searches.
After all that, your work is not yet complete. You need to meander over to the published patent applications portal which keeps all published pending applications except the last 18 months and any other patent applications whose inventors chose to not publish their patent applications. Repeat the same basic process. Keep in mind that there is a window of opportunity wherein you might not be sure of.
It is also further recommended that you also do a basic regular Google search. Then try to scour through catalogs, trade journals, etc. to research any other prior art relevant to your inventions.

Unfortunately, case law now requires that provisional patent applications be completely enabling and nearly match up word for word with their non provisional c

POOR MAN’S PATENT
By: andrew schroeder | 23/07/2009 | Patents. According to the “Poor Man’s Patent”, the inventor simply writes down his invention on paper and sends it to himself in the mail. Supposedly, this sealed envelope with the postmarked date will signify the date of invention and will somehow accord monopoly rights in the invention. The idea of a “Poor Man’s Patent” is an enduring myth with the staying power of urban legends such as Elvis sightings and UFO’s. These urban legends may sound “truthy” but are specious.
