Bathroom Safety - Do You Have A Killer Bathroom?

We all worry about the safety and health of our families. There are so many dangers in the world - from flu pandemics to terrorist attacks people are more on edge now than ever in history I'd imagine. The really scary thing is that a recent study showed that safety in and around your bathroom is something that's neglected by way too many people.

You have a room with lots of running water, plenty of slippery surfaces like tiles and bath tubs. Then you can add in the fact that the bathroom has towel racks, faucets and various other items that are ideal for you to take a nasty fall on and probably do yourself quite a bit of harm. Believe it or not the lack of attention paid to bathroom safety has made the bathroom the most dangerous room in any modern home. What's worse is that situation doesn't look like it will change anytime soon - unless more people are made aware.

First things first - keep your bathroom as dry as possible. Okay by it's nature it's a wet room but that doesn't mean that you can't do your best to keep it that bit more dry. Water is a mild form of lubricant and if you leave it sitting on any surface it removes the amount of friction between you and the surface you're standing on. Less friction means you're far more likely to slip and hurt yourself. So even though you have bathroom slippers you still tend to go into the bathroom in your bare feet right?
That lack of thought has actually cost some people their lives - there's a surprising number of bathroom related deaths each year. Of course now and again it's because somebody brought electrical equipment in with them and that's tragic. What's more tragic is somebody slipping getting out of the tub and dying as a result. Even if you don't want to wear bath slippers then use a pair of flip flops - the same way you do in the gym.

Next you need to look at the various fixtures and fittings in your bathroom. Now if you're honest about it your bathroom was designed with more style and less function in mind - you created it to look good right? There's nothing wrong with that but have you really thought about how many sharp, dangerous edges there are in your bathroom? What would happen if you did slip and hit one of those with your head? Can you find a more functional and safe replacement for that fitting or faucet?

The tiles you use in your bathroom are one of the main danger areas - once they get wet your bathroom can quickly become a skating rink that puts your life at risk. Just do yourself a huge favor and only use tiles that were designed specifically for bathroom use - taking shortcuts or cutting on costs using cheap wall tiles could land you in hospital.
