Adding the right piece of accent furniture to a room can be the thing that transforms a plain design into a great design. Accent pieces highlight a room’s strength and compliment the main furniture pieces in a way that brings the overall design together, all without standing out too much or attracting undue attention.
The key to using accent furniture well is to choose your accent pieces carefully. There’s a lot to choose from, and it can be easy to get carried away. But sometimes, keeping things simple is better. It depends on what room the accent pieces will go in.
Styles
It’s not necessary that the accent furniture you choose be the same exact style as the rest of the room. However it should be complimentary. If a modern accent piece clashes too strongly with a classical room design, it will ruin the overall look of the room. By the same token, if you have an elaborate dresser and a fanciful, antique headboard, and you accent it with an equally elaborate decorative chest, the result might be too much. The key is balance.
Completing Spaces
Accent tables, rugs and chests can serve to fill up spaces that would otherwise look empty or bare. Nooks are often distracting, for example, if they have nothing in them, but they might be too small or ill placed to put an actual piece of major furniture in them. This is where something like an accent vase, hat rack, or a decorative table can come in and make that space feel complete.
However, a room should never feel cluttered, so it’s important to exercise restraint. Sometimes it’s okay to leave spaces bare, so long as they feel balanced. Too much accent pieces can make a room feels stuffy or cluttered.
Wall Art
Wall art should always be hung at eye level. And if above a piece of major furniture, the wall art should be about 6 inches above said piece of furniture. If a painting or other piece of art is hanging to high up from the rest of the furniture in the room, it will look disconnected from the rest of the design.
