Green Flooring Options for the Environmentally Friendly

As the average consumer becomes more and more eco-conscious, the flooring industry has responded with environmentally friendly flooring options. Whether you are looking for carpet, hardwood, or an alternative type of flooring, there is a Green option available. In this article we will discuss these options and why they are a smart choice.

Carpet fibers have been linked to poor indoor air quality as well as health issues which has forced the industry to think Green. When looking for wholesale carpet in Denver it is important to ask about how many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) a carpet has (the lower the better). It is also recommended that the carpeted area is allowed to breathe by opening doors and windows. They type of material a carpet is made of is another important factor. While most carpet is made out of nylon or polypropylene, a healthier, but more expensive option is wool. It has the same look and is just as durable as the synthetic carpets but is much more organic.

Unfortunately, hardwood requires a large number of trees to be cut down. These trees are hundreds of years old and take a long time to regrow. Bamboo is technically a grass which grows rapidly and matures within 2 to 5 years, which makes it much more sustainable than hardwood. While being more renewable, bamboo flooring in Denver is also as durable as most hardwoods at a comparable price. Bamboo can be found almost anywhere hardwood flooring in Denver is available. Bamboo comes in a number of shades that are aesthetically appealing as hardwood as well as being as durable and easy to maintain.

Another option that comes from trees that is easily renewable is cork. By only harvesting the bark of a cork oak tree, the tree is left unharmed and like a sheep will regrow its outer shell to be harvested again quickly. Cork has a honeycomb cellular structure which can be compressed up to 40% and quickly return to its shape. There are a vast variety of colors and grains that can be provided from a quality flooring company such as ProSource Denver. Some of the benefits of cork include being compressible which provides cushion on the feet and helps prevent breaking of falling items. It is also a natural insulator that is flame resistant and sound absorbant. Look for cork flooring in Denver as a cost-efficient, green alternative to other flooring surfaces.
