High-quality carpet is a wise investment that can last many years if properly maintained. Frequent vacuuming, regular steam cleaning and immediate attention to accidents and spills can keep your carpet looking great for a long time. But even under the best of circumstances mishaps happen, and while most new carpets have stain repellents built into the fibers, how do you repair a burn mark?
For Minor Burns
A pair of sharp scissors may be all you need to repair a small burn mark, say from a dropped cigarette or hot match. Get down on your hands and knees and separate the burnt fibers, cutting away one burned strand at a time. This method works best on sculptured carpets, since the fibers are already of various lengths, but even on plush carpets, if the area that you are cutting away is not very large, you can blend in the cut strands with your fingers by brushing and blending the cut strands with the longer ones. However, if the area is too large for this method, you'll need to gather the supplies listed below and patch the damaged area.
Carpet Repair Supplies
To repair larger areas of burned carpet, you will need a sharp utility knife or a circular cutting tool designed for removing small areas of damaged carpet. In addition, you'll need double-sided carpet tape and seam adhesive, as well as a heavy-duty scissors and a fine-tip black marker. You are going to need a remnant that is big enough to replace the damaged section of carpet. If you don't have a remnant you'll need to cut a section out of a closet or other inconspicuous area. If the carpet appears dirty compared to the remnant, steam clean the area first so that the repair will be less noticeable.
Repair Procedure
1. Before doing any cutting at all, align your remnant so that its nap lies in the same direction as the nap of the carpet on the floor. If the nap does not match, your repair will be very noticeable.
2. Use your cutting tool or utility knife to cut away the burned section of carpet, taking care not to cut into the padding underneath. Place the damaged cut out on top of your remnant, aligning the nap. Then, without realigning the direction of either piece of carpet, place the damaged piece underneath your remnant. Flip both pieces over simultaneously and use the marker to trace the shape of the damaged piece on the back of the remnant.
3. Use your cutting tool to cut out the piece of remnant along the marked line. Check the size and nap alignment of the remnant patch by holding it over the cut section of carpet.
4. Apply a small amount of seam adhesive along the rim of the hole that was cut in the carpet to keep the fibers from unraveling. Apply double-sided carpet tape to the back of your patch and add a small amount of seam adhesive along the edges of the patch.
5. Set the patch into place and press down firmly. Set a stack of books or a flat heavy object on top of the patch until the adhesive dries completely; refer to the label for drying times. After it's dry, use your fingers to blend the fibers around the seam of your patch. Wait at least 24 hours before vacuuming.

But many homes do not have a large foyer separated from the rest of the home by architectural features. Very often the 'foyer' is a simple entry space directly in front of the door. Unfortunately, it can become an overflow space full of outerwear and shoes, but with a little planning and creativity, it is possible to give a small entry its very own definitive style.
