Stack it Up in Style!

As an professional interior decorator I often hear that people are intimidated when I come over for a casual visit because acquaintances fear that I would analyze their home, but the truth is that I have trained myself ‘not to’ analyze homes without the consent of the resident – I find it to be common courtesy. I believe it is rude if someone would start looking all around your home without your approval instead of looking at the person (you the host, not your items).

When I do get the request to analyze a room there is a common mistake that I often see - which is: that the furniture and furnishings are not given height within a room, and therefore the rooms look a bit bloated at the bottom and skinny at the top. Yikes, no one wants to feel bloated do they? – not even a room!

What are our goals when decorating (this is a test to all my long time subscribers)? Answer: harmony, balance, and function! Hmm, you knew that – right?!!

So we need to make a room harmonious visually and emotionally. A ‘bloated’ room can even make you feel squished in a room instead of tall and powerful when you walk into the room.

Here are several ideas on how you can bring height within your room:

• mount wall shelves for your books in place of floor bookshelf
• mount cubes to your walls to hold your décor, have the back of the cubes display a fun color that illuminates the décor within –or-  don’t attach a backing at all and have the color of your wall shine through the cube to liven up your décor that you are showcasing within the cubes
• stack plates in your kitchen where they are visible (instead of keeping them cooped up in your cabinets – this will give visual height and a decorative flair to your kitchen.
• stack books in organized piles instead of small ‘bomb mines’ throughout your home
• instead of having a desk organizer hold your files, get a wall mounted organizer (what I like calling your personal ‘valet’ for your files) to keep you organized and your desk clear of clutter
• stack up artwork! Placing several pieces of art in one wall can make a bigger (stylish) impact that when scattered throughout your home. Small and medium size artwork gets lonely if it is the only piece of item on the wall.

Pop quiz again: What are our goals when decorating?

Answer: harmony, balance, and function!

Now that I have given you several ideas to think about, go take a look around your home! Give yourself permission to concentrate and be truthful to what you truly see. How does your home make you feel? Is it missing some ‘height’? Is it missing the décor cooking ingredient herbs called harmony, balance, and function?
