Wall Paint for Small Spaces 

Clever painting is all about illusion and choosing wall paint for small spaces is the epitome of this concept. Gone are the days when the only color that could possibly used as wall paint for small spaces was white. Apart from appearing too stark, your wall paint for small spaces will be far more effective in one of the subtle shades, allowing you to add tone and depth to your chosen color. Dove grey, or a blue-grey is a perfect foil for a small room, although soft heather or a hint of green would be equally effective. There are other things you can do when applying wall paint for small spaces: paint the wall directly opposite the door a deeper hue of your main color -- this will give that wall the appearance of receding further back, thereby opening the room up and giving the illusion of space.  

Use Colors that Refract Light

Coupled with the darker hue opposite the doorway, paler tones will also encourage the walls of the room to appear to diminish. The overall appearance seems to be a much larger room. A good color to choose would be cream or deep butter yellow. Overall, however, most greens, purples and blues will seem to make the walls ebb into the distance, although you do need to be careful of the hues and tones you choose to avoid clashes with soft furnishings at a later stage in the decorating process.  

Whatever colors you choose need to refract an equal intensity unless you decide to stick to the monochromatic look. Whatever you do, however, avoid deep purples, reds or dark blues as these colors absorb light. With these colors, the overall impression would be of a small room looking smaller. Another neat little trick for using wall paint for small spaces is to paint vertical stripes onto the walls of the room you are decorating. This will give the impression of higher ceilings and a more open room.

The Effect of Color

It is well-known that color has an effect on our moods so it is important, when considering wall paint for small spaces, to pick a color that is not going to make you hyper and prevent you getting a good night’s sleep if the room you are decorating is a bedroom. Conversely, if the room you are intending to decorate is for a home office the last thing you are going to need is to choose a color that has soporific tendencies. Choosing a rich warm color such as one of the heather shades will look lovely and welcoming and present a warm appeal when you walk into the room.

If you decide on a contrasting wall as a feature, choose a deep rich neutral color such as sienna. Tone this with light amber on the three remaining walls and team the whole lot with clean white high gloss paint on all the woodwork and the ceiling. Again, it is all about the light being refracted out from the color. You can even enhance this effect by applying a couple of clear coats of satin polyurethane to draw out the natural light from the depths of the paint tones -- with the added bonus that your painted wall acquires a wipe-clean surface!
