Over the last several years we have spoken to many people about how to get most out of a trade show. Many of them are businessmen, past or present clients; others are trade consultants or importers. The total of these opinions that we dispose of allows us to have a truly unique knowledge and experience in this topic.

As we talked with our partners, we heard certain suggestions repeated over and over again. Most of them are quite simple and obvious. But they are important things to do if you wish to grow your international business.

Here are some strategies to help you get the most out of your trade show participation:

1. If this is the first time you take part in a trade show abroad, do some previous market investigation, set measurable goals and plan your work. Your market investigation may include:

- General country information

- Consumer or industrial market overview

- Specific market information (size, annual growth)

- Clients' profile

2. Think of some great marketing ideas. The more you know about the local market, the more specific your message should be.

3. Hire and train the best people. Besides, if you are going to participate in a trade show in Russia, Ukraine or other ex-Soviet countries remember that very few local businessmen speak English or other foreign languages so you will have to hire local team to drive your company to success.

Avoid hiring an interpreter with no sales experience. There is a rule in international trade and it says "never sell products through an interpreter". It's simple. If you are not able to establish a personal contact with the buyer you will never sell anything.

4. Spend time and money on creating memorable marketing materials. Prepare samples and promotional giveaways that complement your company image and message.
