Search Engine Content Optimization - 5 Tips

The job of a good search engine is to do its best to accurately match the keywords of a human user with relevant Web sites. It stands to reason, then, that those Web sites that feature frequently-searched content - content that is optimized - will rank higher in search engines than will other sites.

Here are 5 tips for doing search engine content optimization.

Tip #1: Do not rely solely on keyword meta tags: Five to ten years ago, you could do good search engine optimization just by submitting your site to a ton of directories and loading up your HTML with keyword meta tags: information that search engines could see but that casual site visitors could not. Nowadays, keyword meta tags do almost nothing to help your site achieve a strong ranking. That said, it never hurts to take the time to find some good meta tags, as some search engines still use them to help classify your Web site. Go ahead and use them, but do not rely on them solely for your optimization strategy.

Tip #2: Make sure the content is relevant to the mission of your site: The days of packing your site with irrelevant keywords are over, as search engine meta-crawlers are increasingly sophisticated at assessing content quality. Instead, focus on finding content keywords that accurately reflect the mission - or goals - of your site. This will also increase the chances that people who actually desire the content you offer will visit your site.

Tip #3: Find content that is frequently searched in search engines: This is pretty straightforward, but Webmasters and content creators often overlook it: make sure the content you are using in your site is associated with keywords that people are actually searching for. There is really no way to find this out, however, without using a keyword optimization tool (see #5 below).

Tip #4: Use keywords that are featured on as few competitive sites as possible: Yes, you want keywords that are hot, but not so hot that everyone and his brother have them featured in their Web sites. Rather, competitive keywords are those magical ones that are both frequently searched and underrepresented on other sites.

Tip #5: Use a keyword optimization tool for best results: In order to get optimized content, you are going to need a keyword optimization tool. Overture provides a nice, free tool for doing quick searches, but it is severely limited in terms of speed, functionality, and its ability to tell you whether a keyword is competitive. I recommend using Wordtracker®, the leading tool available today. You can get a free trial at: http://www.Wordtracker-Free-Trial.com/

Search engine content optimization is almost important as having good content: without it, the people you are really targeting will rarely find your Web site. Embedding your site with content that is rich with keywords that people actually search for, but that have few competitive Web site featuring that content, is one of the smartest things you can do to improve your site rankings. It is worth spending an hour or so to really get to know a keyword optimization tool and start finding keywords that really set your site apart. I guarantee your competition is already doing it.
