Uk Web Search: Trends & Opportunities

What exactly are UK searchers doing online? If statistics are to be believed, a large percentage of them migrate straight to search engines to find the information they want.

According to a Neilsen Netrating, search engines feature prominently in the top ten lists of sites visited by UK users. In early 2007, search engines overtook even the ever-popular adult sites in share, among UK internet users, accounting for 13.3% of all visits. In addition, the market share of UK internet visits to search engines grew 21% year-on-year.

Google is still the leader in the UK web search market, accounting for 87.3 per cent of all UK searches in May 2008. But, although Google and other search engines dominate the general search segment, the market for local and regional search is much more open, according to Robin Goad of Hitwise.

He notes that a lot of UK searchers use local terms when searching, and certain categories, such as Business & Finance and Shopping & Classifieds, receive more traffic from specialist local search providers.

Although general search engines still take up a large component of the search market in Great Britain, there are a number of regional search engines, such as Searchers.co.uk, that offer excellent local search features.

Using a regional search engine can save you a great deal of time and effort by giving you the most relevant results. Because they primarily cater to searchers and businesses from a specific region, using a regional search engine is the quickest way to find information for local search terms.

UK-based search engines help searchers from the United Kingdom find the information they need more quickly, since they do not have to dig through pages of global search results to get to it.

For example, a local search for "Dixons in Dundee" will give immediate and relevant results on a regional search engine like Searchers.co.uk, as compared to a global search engine such as Google, which will return pages of results that you have to click through to find relevant information.

Along with various other industry leaders such as Kelkoo, Yahoo!, and Scoot, regional search providers like Searchers.co.uk can provide searchers in Great Britain with additional features such as product search, news search and a local business directory search of more than 2 million UK company records.

Because they serve regional markets, search engines that cater to the UK searcher are also a better bet for advertisers looking to target this demographic. With relevant results and a local audience, UK-based search engines can give both users and advertisers exactly what they're looking for.
