The Internet never ceases to amaze hard core network professionals and amateurs alike with its advancements. It sometimes makes you wonder what you would have done if the Internet never existed. Each day brings in new technology and new platforms and the Internet industry is abuzz with new jargons, tools and versions of software. The buzz word of the Silicon Valley right now is Web 2.0. You have to be a hard core technical person to figure out the details and the exact workings of the technology called web 2.0.

With the evolution of the Internet it is becoming increasingly easier or companies and large and small organizations to reach out to a bigger audience. We turn to the internet for everything these days. Part of the reason is that everybody is making everything available on the internet. From finding out the address of a place to shopping and dating, the Internet has become a common platform for people of all ages. Web 2.0 is the talk of the town now and many of us are still trying to figure out what exactly web 2.0 is all about.

Although the name web 2.0 looks like the version number of a software it is not so. Web 2.0 represents a transition of the internet from being unidirectional to bi-directional. It makes interaction possible between humans and machines. Web 2.0 can be better understood by understanding its key components, namely:

* The read/write web: The web is no loner looked as a one way medium where people use it only to read. In this web version, the internet is perceived as a two way medium where people do not only read but also contribute to the web by being writers as well. This has been inspired by the growing amount of social networking sites and social software that make communication between two or more people possible.

* The web is now looked as a platform for communication. The internet is perceives as a platform that programmers can use to create innovative software for creative applications. The main push behind this revolution is what is called the APIs or Application Programming Interface. This makes communication possible between two applications.

Many people look at Web 2.0 as a separate entity or platform. However one should keep in mind that it has been born as an evolution of the already existing Internet or the World Wide Web. It is the same internet that we have been using all along. Web 2.0 is an improved version of our common Internet, albeit with different issues and technical snags. Web 2.0 has been embraced by many leading companies such as Yahoo, Google, eBay and Amazon.

Web 2.0 has proved to be an important tool for internet business for many major companies. It provides many business opportunities but at the same time presents challenges on the sharing and collaboration front for many different companies. Web 2.0 has made it possible to digitize and distribute content in all forms including text, PDF, images, audio and video content. Since digitized content can now be distributed online, the number of vendors offering digital content is also exploding.

Web 2.0 is influencing the way consumers perceive advertisements. Internet based advertisements are becoming increasing popular and effective while mass-audience broadcasts are losing their hold for advertisers. End user applications are being developed at an alarming rate and the need to deliver them fast in order to either increase organizational dexterity or to make sure new products reach the market rapidly. These days the life of a commercially viable product is reduced to less than standard application consumption life cycle. This implies that unless the products and ideas reach the market faster than the usual traditional methods; the product may lose its place in the market.

In other cases it is mandatory that one responds quickly to competition, threats and situations that have arisen unexpectedly. This means that market analysts and experts require properly assembled data that is content driven. In these ways Web 2.0 is proving to be a blessing for business professionals. Internet business definitely has Web 2.0 to thank for making life easier albeit in some situations.
