If you do decide to submit your site to search engines, do not use automated services, always submit manually. Some of the automated services are scams and the search engines frown upon them anyway.
Stay abreast of search engine news, especially anything that could affect website rankings. However, if you play by the rules and have valuable content, these algorithm changes normally won't affect you. There are plenty of online tools and utilites for keeping track of how your website is doing, use them. Demonstrate your industry and product or service expertise by writing and submitting articles for your website to the article banks so you are perceived as an expert in your field.
Monitor your competitors and the top ranked websites to see what they are doing right in the way of website design, navigation, content, keywords, etc. Your web hosting company should have reports and logs you can use to see where your customers are coming from. Analyze your visitor location and their incoming sources whether from search engines or links from other sites and the keywords they used to find you. Make your customers visit simple and give them plenty of ways to remember you in the form of newsletters, free reports, coupons etc.
