Death of the High Street! Long Live the Internet

This week in all the doom and gloom of the so call recession, high street shops reported a loss in profit for the last quarter. Marks and Spencer, one of the biggest high street retailers and a bench mark for other high street retailers has reported a 43 percent fall in net profits for the first half of the year.

Going against the Trent

This is all bad news for the high street but not for Internet retailers as online sales for the last quarter have risen 16% As the credit crunch begins to bite, more people turn to the web for cheap deals. Online retailers have lower overheads than the high street retailers; therefore their savings are passed on to the customers. Over the last couple of years online retailers have slowly been taking business away for the big high street chains.

Although Many people have been scared about buying things online due to fears about fraud and identity theft. Another issue that prevents products/services being purchased online include the lack of knowledge on the part of the users - This mainly applies to the older generation, I apologies for stereotyping and I know there are a lot of older Internet savvy users but it does change the fact that many older people fear buying product online due to a lack of knowledge and understand. In fairness there are many thing older people such as my dad can do which I can’t such as feather a chicken so this isn’t a criticism, I am just telling it as it is. With the credit crunch kicking in it is obvious that people are leaving there unfounded fears behind and turning to the Internet to get more for the money. Many local high street shop have already turned in to trendy wine bars, along with the banks, this credit crunch may be the final nail in the coffin for the high street.

Still growing

Coupled with this the Internet is still growing, only a third of the population of the UK is online and it has grown steady since the early nineties, and show no sign of stopping. The true worth of being an online retail though is that your target audience is Global, something that a high street shop can’t provide.

It’s no good without SEO or PPC

With 76% of online sale generate via search engine all of the benefits of being an online retailer which I have talk about above are worthless with out SEO or PPC as being no where in the search engine is not going to allow you to befit from the boom of online sale
