When you look at something on the surface, it can often seem so simple and the same goes for an airline reservation system. If you need to reserve a flight on an airline, you simply give them a call and its as easy as that. Some person on the other end of the line handles your call, takes down your information and makes an “X” on a seat of of a big picture of a jet on the wall behind them with a felt pen and it is as easy as that, or is it?

Can it really be that easy? Of course not! Perhaps when airlines first started offering commercial service to the public decades ago they might have had a system similar to that but things have changed since then. For one thing airlines are much bigger and now offer far more flights to far more locations. Also, airlines are now in constant competition with each other to offer their customers more service options.

Still one more business that has sprung up due to the growth in complexity of airline reservation systems, is “outsourcing” businesses that handle this aspect of an airlines business all or in part.
