In order to get good targeted traffic to your site you must do some basic keyword research. This is to insure that you get those that are searching for what you have to find your site and to make sure they are the ones that are looking to buy something. It can be easy to get lots of traffic, but unless they are visitors ready to buy then its wasted traffic.
My favorite free site to use is Google’s Adword’s Keyword Tool, this does a good job of getting you started. Without going into detail, it gives you the choice of entering a keyword or phrase into a box and letting it search this for you. It will give you a list of keywords that are related to that which you entered.
A simple way is to take keywords that show from 500 to 5000 under the Global Monthly Search Volume column. This will keep you out of the most competitive keywords but still bring some traffic. You can play around with it some, click on Advertiser Competition at the top and it will give you a different view
If you use a keyword that is short like paint, it is not very specific. It may bring you a lot of traffic but it is not the focused traffic you want. Try something like latex house paint, this is a more narrowly focused keyword and would be useful. If your site was about latex house paint this would be a good keyword.
It takes some practice to get good at searching for your keywords. You can find good information in some of the internet marketing books available.
