Top 3 Myths About Free Online Lead Generation for Network Marketers

Marketers left and right are jumping on the internet marketing bandwagon, looking for ways to generate free online leads.  This is especially true in network marketing, where a giant tsunami is taking place in the industry as networkers abandon the old school methods of finding leads.  Most have been “trained” to cold call paid leads or troll malls, bookstores, and coffee shops in search of their next sponsor.   These strategies, not surprisingly, have extremely low success rates for most people.  

Networkers typically start out all full of hope and a vision of an extravagant lifestyle funded by passive residual income that rolls into their bank accounts as they kick back and drink margaritas.  Then the cold hard reality sets in when they start recruiting using old school ways and find out it's not so easy to get 2, who get 2, who get 2, and so on.  You've got to talk to a lot of people to find the 2 who get 2, who get 2 more, etc.

The internet, and especially online lead generation strategies, have given many networkers new hope.  There are numerous ways to generate leads on the internet.  Before you decide on an approach to generate online leads, you should consider these 3 popular myths.

Myth #1: There really aren't any free online lead generation strategies.   You're probably thinking “But Karen, there are lots of ways to generate free leads on the internet like article writing, forum postings, safelists, blogging, online videos, classified ads, social networking, etc.”   Either you think I don't have a clue about internet marketing, or I'm off my rocker for making this statement. Let me explain.  

While it is true there are methods for generating online leads that do not cost any money, there are hidden costs that most people do not consider.  The hidden costs are time, leverage, effectiveness, and lost opportunity.  When selecting your online marketing strategies, it is crucial to look at more than just the dollar cost of the method. 

When I mentor a new team member, I sit down with them and go over the various ways they can generate leads online and look at all of these factors - monetary cost, time cost, leverage, effectiveness, and opportunity cost, as well as their skills and interests.  And then we periodically evaluate their situation and make adjustments to their strategy if needed.

Myth #2: Network marketing is a relationship business and can't be done on the internet.  This is absolutely false and there are many, many examples of highly successful network marketers that have built their teams exclusively using online methods.  I have many mentors that fall into this category - Mike Dillard, Daegan Smith, Dave Sherwin, and Jonathan Budd to name a few. 

There are many ways to build online relationships.  Email and online videos are 2 very effective formats for relationship building.  Let your personality come through in your emails and tell stories about things that happen to you.  When done effectively, online video makes your prospects feel like they really know you before they join your team. 

Myth #3: It is not possible to generate high quality, low cost leads online. Fortunately, this is not true.  There are many ways to build a responsive list of prospects without spending a fortune.  Actively participating in forums focused on your industry or niche is one great way to build a list of hyper responsive prospects.  There are many others.  I am happy to say it does not have to cost an arm and a leg to generate high-quality online leads.
