Interview success comes in only one flavor! It depends entirely on YOU! And how you handle yourself when you meet face-to-face with the person who could be your next boss,. More than anything else, your interview success depends on the outcome of that meeting. Guaranteed!
Look. Here are the facts of life. Despite everything you've heard, no one will hire you on the basis of your resume. Resumes don't make hiring decisions. Nor, for that matter, do personnel or human resources officers. There's only one person who has to be convinced that you're the right person for the job. That person, of course, is your next boss.
Now, you may think that the way to convince a decision-maker is to tout your work history . . . to demonstrate how well you worked in previous jobs . . . to point out your qualities and capabilities you achieved in the past.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
You will be hired for one reason, and one reason only--because your next boss likes you! In short, he/she has good feeling about you.
And there's only one way to assure yourself that you can accomplish interview success. Take the time to develop RAPPORT AND CHEMISTRY with the decision-maker. Without it, you'll never get the job -- no matter how talented you are.
YOU must take the initiative to develop that rapport and chemistry. You can't afford to leave it to chance. Here are 5 proven steps to help you take control and guarantee interview success
1. Pay a compliment. Be prepared to say something complimentary preferably based on information you've learned in advance.
2. Establish a dialogue. At all costs you don't want this meeting to turn into a formal interview where he/she asks questions and you provide answers. You want to create an environment of mutual conversation.
3. Ask intelligent questions. Give the decision-maker an opportunity to tout his/her accomplishments and the successes of the organization.
4. Tell interesting stories. When the time comes to talk about yourself, do so in a story format in which you tell about a successful situation you've contributed to. Mention the results you got in quantifiable terms. And keep it short and to the point. You should have several good stories prepared in advance that you can pop in at the right moment.
5. Offer to do something useful. Perhaps there's a newspaper article of interest you could bring -- maybe a relevant project you're working on you could share -- or some research you'd be happy to perform, etc. Make the decision-maker feel like your in sync with his/her interests and objectives.
With a little forethought and practice, you can be in control of a face-to face meeting with your next boss. When you know how to guarantee your interview success, the job search process becomes less desperate and more exciting.
