Fast Track to Interview Success Part 1

Why Interview?

The whole interview process is a mutual exchange of information between both parties. You and the company need to be sold on each other for there to be a win-win situation that makes all parties happy.

Most interviews are 80% character searching and 20% operational skill set. So obviously, the critical areas are your professional appearance, attitude, personality, energy and enthusiasm. The operational skill set is composed of your strengths like training and development, cost control, sales building and cleanliness. There are other strengths you certainly possess, but you get the picture.

Preparation Before the Interview

Always discuss with your recruiter the exact duties and requirements of the position, the training program, future opportunities within the company and your salary requirements. They can also explain to you what to expect on this interview, the personality of interviewer, and the possibility of testing, both written and drug related.

Your recruiter will give you information about the company prior to your interview, but you should learn as much as you can on your own.
I suggest using the company website always as the first step and then visit a location if possible. This way you can speak directly to current employees and have an inside angle on where the company is headed and a quick lead on the other candidates interviewing.

Also please know where you're going and drive the route the day or evening before the interview. Expect major traffic delays, especially if you live near Atlanta, so provide plenty of drive time. Being late for an interview is a deal killer the majority of the time.

Successful and Professional Dress Tips

For men, always wear a crisp, starched, long-sleeve shirt with solid red power tie. If a jacket is worn, wear a dark jacket and dark pressed dress slacks. If the position is more casual, starched khakis are appropriate. Polish up those dress shoes, preferably black and wear dark socks. Jewelry should be limited and keep it to a wedding ring/class ring and watch. Facial hair is not acceptable during an interview and can be grown back after you start your new job, if they allow it. Never wear heavy perfume or cologne and as trendy as it is, visible body piercing is not acceptable for management positions.

For women always wear a skirt or dress slacks with a wrinkle-free blouse and jacket, and professional dress pumps. Your make-up should be moderately applied and long hair should be put up or at least pulled back. Just like the men, never wear heavy perfume or cologne and visible body piercing is not acceptable for management positions.

Most companies are conservative and will prefer a more business casual look more in line with their corporate culture. So do your homework and unless instructed by your recruiter, ALWAYS follow the above advice.

And it goes without saying that there should be no drinking or smoking before the interview. The interviewer will be able to pick up on the smell or your impairment and instantly disqualify you.

Stop Lying to Yourself!

By: Raymond Sahley | 18/06/2007 | Careers
Most of us are taught from day one as children that lying is BAD! This is probably not a new revelation to you and I believe that the moral majority is not deceitful most of the time. Sure there are occasions where we lie for seemingly “good” reasons, but I know that is a load of crap! This behavior actually kills people.

Don't be an Interview Idiot!

By: Raymond Sahley | 31/05/2007 | Interviews
As a recruiter in the restaurant industry, I see candidates or job seekers do stupid things in the interview all day long. Obviously, we all have an idiot gene hidden in our bodies waiting to emerge somewhere down the road. If you really want to be an idiot and NOT get that new position or career opportunity you dream of follow these actions.

Attack of the Qsr and Why Quick Serve Restaurants Rule!

By: Raymond Sahley | 23/05/2007 | Careers
QSR or quick serve restaurants are here to stay. Love them or hate them, fast food is “where it’s at”. This segment of the food service industry is growing more rapidly than any other area with sales forecasted near $145 billion this year. And this comes at a time in our society where watching what you eat and counting calories is a daily occurrence for most of us.

I Can Help Everyone in the World!

As a restaurant management recruiter, I help a lot of people find new and exciting careers in the food service industry. Although I can’t directly place or find career opportunities for everyone, I always provide some degree of help on their search. This can be help through my website with the resume writing, help with their interviewing skills and preparation, help with tips on what to wear and what to follow up with and when, help with personally assessing who they really are and what they

Divas and Mcdonalds

By: Raymond Sahley | 15/05/2007 | Careers
Why do people have such a low level of respect for quick serve team members? This continues to fascinate and disgust me at the same time. Like a redneck’s tan line I cannot look away! Seriously though, why do people who frequent the fast food places hate the people who work there? The quick serve or fast food industry is a multi-billion dollar generator of income, cash flow and more importantly opportunity for all of the people. Not just the people who had enough money to go to college and get “real jobs” that people love hearing about. The average person does not understand the fast food effect on the economy, but even some white-collar people got their start there. Of course they will never admit to it at a golf outing or in public. It is their scarlet letter of shame shaped like two arches on their chest.

The Katrina Effect

By: Raymond Sahley | 14/05/2007 | Careers
First off let me say how much compassion I have for all the participants of the devastating Hurricane Katrina. I don’t like the word victim because that implies a guilty party inflicting harm on another and whom can you blame in this case? Certainly not W or do the “evil republicans” have a hidden weather machine targeting minorities? As a restaurant management recruiter in Atlanta, I have seen first hand how this disaster has left its mark on the citizens of the region. There are 2 types of candidates that I have tried to help in the last year and a half: the “Why Me” and the “Survivor”.

Why Should We Hire You?

By: Raymond Sahley | 11/05/2007 | Careers
Sometimes this is the last question of a phone screen or a face-to-face interview. Regardless of when it occurs, and believe me it will, you should be ready to rock and roll with your answer! A great candidate like you should be more than ready to absolutely kill this question with your fluid communication and self-marketing skills. By preparing for this question and relaxing in the interview you will slay this hiring manager dragon.
