What Does an Employment Background Check Consist Of?

The most common intention of a background check is employment or the pre-employment procedures. It is cross-checking gathered information through job interviews, meetings and written applications. But before an employer does a background check on a person, one has to sign a written consent for the employment background check. Employers, for security reasons, are just as careful and intent on doubly checking every detail about a potential employee in order to avoid potential risks. Upon signing of the consent form, the past of the potential employee will be verifiable anytime to the employer. The credit history, driving and medical records, military records as well as court records are now an open book. Other potential employers even interview the neighbors and former co-workers during the course of the background check.

Unfortunately, there is a tendency that wrong information may be fed to the potential employer during the background check . Lots of inaccurate information will show in the report. In addition there will be a lack of privacy in today’s society. The outcome is that the institutions are built for monitoring people always, but there will no check and balance ensuring that the people are treated equally if the information is wrong.

If the employer decides not to get the individual because of the employee background check, the firm should be able to show a copy of the background check report and a copy of the rights of the potential employee. Minimally, a background check will verify the social security number of the potential employee. Moreover, the employee background check report will include the potential employee’s work history analysis, criminal history and driving records. Inquiries stated should be related to the job. For instance, if a person would like to work in a bank, it is just right to find out if the potential employee has a history of theft or money fraud.

There are some details that should not be disclosed whatever reasons there may be. One cannot be discriminated against if the person filed for bankruptcy, but bankruptcies are known to be a public record and therefore easy for employers to get the much needed information. Employers cannot request medical records and may not be able to make hiring decision based on the disability of the job applicant. Inquiry about the ability to perform a certain job is the only option that employers can do. The military may disclose the applicant’s name, rank, assignments, wages and awards without the consent of the potential employee. The driving records are not confidential either and may be released without consent as well.

These and more are the main functions of an employment background check. It may be discriminatory to others who didn’t choose to have bad records, but being a victim of circumstances. However it may help an individual or a company, treating the applicant fair after having his record reviewed is always expected.
