Birthplace of Tanzanite: Tanzania

Nowadays jewelry customers worldwide have become more and more concerned about the origin of the gemstones they are purchasing. But for tanzanite, customers can be assured of the source as tanzanite is found only in one place throughout the entire world, i.e. in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Tanzanite’s blue-violet color takes us through a magical journey of its mystical land of origin.

Tanzania is a united, peaceful, and democratic nation. It is one of the most politically stable countries in Africa. Shortly after achieving independence from Britain in the early 1960s, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. The name Tanzania is a portmanteau of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.  The United Republic of Tanzania is a unitary republic composed of 26 mikoa (regions). The current President is Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, elected in 2005.As a society the people are tolerant and embrace diversity with grace and are respectful of different political perspectives, religions and ethnic tribes. Tanzania's population has been estimated to consist of roughly one third each Christians, Muslims and followers of indigenous religious groups.Having a literacy rate of 78% Tanzanians are a proud and dignified people; proud of their language, their heritage and their country.

Tanzania has a non-arid climate in which all twelve months have a mean temperature above 19?C.We know this type of climate better as tropical type climate. Where only in highlands, temperatures range between 10?C during cold to 20?C in hot seasons. The rest of the country rarely experience temperature lower than 20?C. The hottest period extends between November and February while the coldest period occurs between May and August. Two rainfall regimes exist over Tanzania. Unimodal extending from December – April in southern, south-west, central and western parts of the country and the other bimodal from October -December and March - May found in the north and northern coast. In the bimodal regime the March - May rains are referred to as the long rains or Masika, whereas the October - December rains are generally known as short rains or Vuli.

Tanzania is a proud owner of an extreme diversity. It has Africa’s lowest point (the floor of Lake Tanganyika),  Africa’s highest peak (Mt Kilimanjaro), Africa’s largest lake (Lake Victoria), the extensive Serengeti plains, the Great Rift Valley, largest concentration of wild animals including 364 species of mammals and 1108 species of birds, the paradisiacal beaches of Zanzibar and of course the splendid gemstone Tanzanite.
