The origins of the Akoya pearls dates to the early nineteenth century when a Japanese businessman named Kokichi Mikimoto introduced a unique pearl culture method to speed up the process of pearl formation with human help. Known as bead nucleating method, Akoya pearls started to be cultivated on a large scale by both Japan and China. Over the years, China has far exceeded Japan in culturing this pearl with the help of modern improved techniques. These pearls require around three to five years to develop and be categorized under high quality pearls.
Akoya pearls develop from the Pinctada oyster variety. These are small mollusks and hence the pearl size varies between 3mm to 9mm. The quality of pearl depends on the layers of nacre secreted by the oyster. These oysters produce only two Akoya Pearls in comparison to freshwater oysters which produce around fifty pearls each. The former cannot grow in large numbers on account of varying climatic conditions.
