Jewellery has been a part of human culture for centuries. In the fashion world, trends tend to repeat themselves so vintage jewellery is often a great way to be fashionable without having to spend a fortune.
As it's often difficult to tell what the next big fashion trend is going to be, it's a good idea to forge your own sense of style and to buy accessories that you personally enjoy and love. Vintage is often an excellent choice as it is an investment - choose wisely and even when a fad passes, your vintage jewellery will often hold it's price a lot better than newer items which are out of fashion. Even if your vintage jewellery is not quite on-fashion, vintage in itself tends to be seen as 'stylish' therefore you can always wear your vintage pieces with confidence!
However not all vintage jewellery is equal - and there are two major factors to consider: the condition and the quality.
Vintage Jewellery Condition: Although Victorian jewellery could reasonably be expected to look older than newer pieces, don't accept second best. Extremely worn plating, missing parts or stone, cloudy rhinestones or chipped or scratched elements will all lower the value of the jewellery. Check the vintage piece for obvious repairs and/or replacements as these may also lower the value of the jewellery.
Vintage Jewellery Quality: Quality vintage jewellery will tend to hold their prices better over time. If you find a bargain piece of jewellery you love, buy it! But if you are looking for more of an investment, a quality piece will be a better buy. Signs of 'quality' include good weight, prolonged settings, smooth plating and sparkling stones.
Some jewellery manufacturers are also more collectible than others - most notable jewellers include Eisenberg, Miriam Haskell, Kramer, Weiss and Schiaparelli.
