Politicians are the causes of electoral violence in Nigeria – APV

A non-governmental organization, Arewa Patriotic Vanguard has blamed the Nigerian politicians for the involvement of youth in electoral violence and the use of youths as political thugs.

In Nigeria, the involvement of youths in various acts of violence have become a regular menace in the region as youths are frequently seen in the scene of political, electoral and religious violence which often leads to the death of thousands and leaving hundreds youths injured.

Speaking with reporters in a workshop organized by Arewa Patriotic Vanguard, the Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrazak Gidado said unless Nigeria finds a way to prevent pre, during and post election violence and election rigging the country has not yet began the practice of democracy.

“The nature, extent of youth involvement in electoral violence, and magnitude of violence associated with elections and rigging in Nigeria are posing threats to the national quest for stable democratic transition, as well as to the attainment of consolidated democracy.

“Unless something is done to deal with these problems at this early stage Nigeria is yet to experience true democracy, they could grow and assume monstrous proportions that could derail the Nigerian democratic system.”

At the centre of electoral violence and rigging in Nigeria are youths who are used as party thugs, party workers and who are made to form wings used by party henchmen for political violence and criminal activities for a token of money.

In an interview the Guest speaker, Mr. Aliyu Bala who stressed the fact that youths’ involvement in electoral violence contributes to a substantial level of the existing culture of political violence in the country, which erodes people’s confidence in the electoral system, democracy, and rule of law in Nigeria.

“Due to the level of involvement of youth in electoral violence no one has confidence in Nigeria democracy  and apart from that the youth destroys themselves as most of them are usually wounded while some are killed during the violent acts in name of securing a political seat for someone they whom do not care about them.”

APV calls on the Nigerian youths to be engaged in productive ventures that would prepare them for future leadership and productive adult lives.
