“Grandma what is baby cat called?” This is a question that often comes up and it is easy when it is a baby cat, but what about those other animals. Some of them can make you head for the dictionary or encyclopedia to try to find the answer.
Here are a few to help all those grandparents that would like to be in the know.
Kid is the name of the offspring of people, antelopes, and goats.
Cub is the name of the offspring of bears, fox, lions, tigers and wolves.
Kit is the name of the offspring of beaver, bobcats, fox, and rabbits.
Pup is the name of the offspring of beaver, dogs, and seals.
Kitten is the name of the offspring of cats and rabbits
Calf is the name of the offspring of cattle, elephants, giraffe, rhinoceros, and whales.
Chick is the name of the offspring of chickens and ostriches.
Fawn is the name of the offspring of deer.
Foal is the name of the offspring of donkeys, and horses.
Colt is the name of the offspring of donkeys, horses, and zebras.
Duckling is the name of the offspring of ducks.
Eaglet is the name of the offspring of eagles.
Leptocephalus is the name of the offspring of eels.
Fry is the name of the offspring of fish.
Whelp is the name of the offspring of fox, otter, seals, and wolf.
Gosling is the name of the offspring of geese.
Eyas is the name of the offspring of hawks.
Piglet is the name of the offspring of pigs. and hogs.
Shoat is the name of the offspring of hogs.
Filly is the name of the offspring of horses.
Joey is the name of the offspring of kangaroo.
Spat is the name of the offspring of oysters
Poult is the name of the offspring of turkeys
Lamb, lambkin and teg is the name of the offspring of sheep.
Cygnet is the name of the offspring of swans.
As you may have noticed several of the animals have a couple of names for their young such as the beaver who has young that are known as kits or pups. Donkeys young can be called foal or colts. Fox young can be called cubs, kits or whelps. Hogs offspring can be called piglets or shoat. Horse offspring can be called foal, colt (male) or filly (female), A rabbits offspring can be called kit or kittens. Seals offspring can be called pups or whelp.
So next time your grand child asks what is a baby giraffe called you will know it is a calf. Good luck with all the other questions they will come up with.
