“Grandma what is baby cat called?” This is a question that often comes up and it is easy when it is a baby cat, but what about those other animals. Some of them can make you head for the dictionary or encyclopedia to try to find the answer.

Here are a few to help all those grandparents that would like to be in the know.

Kid is the name of the offspring of people, antelopes, and goats.

Cub is the name of the offspring of bears, fox, lions, tigers and wolves.

Kit is the name of the offspring of beaver, bobcats, fox, and rabbits.

Pup is the name of the offspring of beaver, dogs, and seals.

Kitten is the name of the offspring of cats and rabbits

Calf is the name of the offspring of cattle, elephants, giraffe, rhinoceros, and whales.

Chick is the name of the offspring of chickens and ostriches.

Fawn is the name of the offspring of deer.

Foal is the name of the offspring of donkeys, and horses.

Colt is the name of the offspring of donkeys, horses, and zebras.

Duckling is the name of the offspring of ducks.

Eaglet is the name of the offspring of eagles.

Leptocephalus is the name of the offspring of eels.

Fry is the name of the offspring of fish.

Whelp is the name of the offspring of fox, otter, seals, and wolf.

Gosling is the name of the offspring of geese.

Eyas is the name of the offspring of hawks.

Piglet is the name of the offspring of pigs. and hogs.

Shoat is the name of the offspring of hogs.

Filly is the name of the offspring of horses.

Joey is the name of the offspring of kangaroo.

Spat is the name of the offspring of oysters

Poult is the name of the offspring of turkeys

Lamb, lambkin and teg is the name of the offspring of sheep.

Cygnet is the name of the offspring of swans.

As you may have noticed several of the animals have a couple of names for their young such as the beaver who has young that are known as kits or pups. Donkeys young can be called foal or colts. Fox young can be called cubs, kits or whelps. Hogs offspring can be called piglets or shoat. Horse offspring can be called foal, colt (male) or filly (female), A rabbits offspring can be called kit or kittens. Seals offspring can be called pups or whelp.

So next time your grand child asks what is a baby giraffe called you will know it is a calf. Good luck with all the other questions they will come up with.

By: michelle | 20-07-2008
I have a female cat that iws 2 years old. I've had her since she was about a week old. I had another cat at the time and the vet said she would learn things from the other cat. The other cat has since died. This cat will not urinate in the litter box. She finds clothes to go in. How do I get her to start going in the litter box? When she has a BM she goes in the litter box but she urinated on clothes. I got her fixed last year hoping that would fix it but it didn't. I have to get rid of her if she doesn't stop & my kids won't be happy about that. How do I get her to stop?

Strang animal sighting
By: hawkfanmb | 20-07-2008
i saw an animal yesterday that i'm having a hard time triing to identify. It crossed the road in front of me and stopped in the ditch so i got a good look at it. at first i thought it was a red fox it had a long fluffy tail that went straight off his backside about 18-24 inches. it was kind of redish brown in color. what struck me was it looked like it had shorter front legs than rear and seemed to walk like a racoon. it had a pointy nose. it reminded me of a meercat from africa only larger. it stood about 20-24 inches at the shoulder. any ideas?

Elementary Substitute Teaching Tips
By: caroline mackay | 29/03/2008 | K-12 Education
Most teachers hate getting a substitute teacher for their class because it is so much work to get prepared for the substitute. Since many districts have gone to the automated sub finder system the teacher is also never sure who will be their substitute and that worries them because the wrong substitute teacher can make more work for the regular teacher. So if you are going to substitute then you need to go in prepared to help the teacher and maintain control of the class.
