Many have asked me how Ho Math and Chess is different from Kumon Math. Both Kumon Math and Ho Math and Chess use worksheets to teach math and get children to work on progressive math worksheets. The biggest difference is the way the worksheets are produced.

Ho Math and Chess teaching idea stems from its founder’s Mr. Frank Ho’s personal experience while teaching his son Andrew chess when Andrew was 5 years old. This is very similar to Kumon math’s founder Mr. Toru Kumon ’s experience in teaching his son math. Both Mr. Kumon and Mr. Ho have gained insights by teaching their own child in creating the franchise business in teaching math but in a very different approach of creating worksheets.

Ho Math and Chess was founded on the philosophy that math must be taught in a fun and cool way. Because of this reason Ho Math and Chess integrates game and math together and the game used at Ho Math and Chess is the international chess – an universal language which many kids in the world can play and enjoy while working on math.

Mr. Ho discovered the language which links between chess and math and thus patented his idea and created the world’s first math and chess integrated workbooks for elementary students. Consequently, Mr. Ho also created Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set so that children as young as 4 years old can learn chess with ease. Frank also created Frankho Chess Mazes, which is very different from traditional mazes in such a way that Frankho Chess Mazes improve children’s visualization ability and also their analytical ability.

The math worksheets at Ho Math and Chess integrate math and chess using new and patented applied technology with innovative teaching idea.

For children who do not just want to work on pure math worksheets only then Ho Math and Chess offers an alternative. Mr. Ho also created mathematical chess puzzles, which resemble IQ puzzles so children can have the opportunity to do brain fitness and improve their brain power at the same time. Ho Math and Chess is taking the leading role of integrating math, chess, puzzles, and brain fitness all into one workbook. Ho Math and Chess worksheets are fun, entertaining, and educational.

It is the teaching philosophy of having fun while learning math differs Ho Math and Chess from Kumon math and all other math learning centers in the world.

Online Tutoring Essentials: Communication

By: shashanks | 20/12/2009
Online tutoring, as practiced by some tutors, is more of a ‘knowledge giving process’ than 'a tutor-child interaction'. Scientifically speaking, the latter is far better than the former. Let us understand the reason for this?

Teaching Dyscalculia Children Using Chess

By: Frank Ho | 23/12/2009 | Tutoring
I start to understand dyscalculia after I taught some children who had math disabilities. I got very strange feeling when teaching those children - it did not matter how I taught using manipulatives or concrete examples, their progresses were not in proportion to the time I spent with them. After I did research in dyscalculia, I started to create worksheets for those students. My worksheets created were specifically tested by those students having dyscalculia.

What Makes Math Learning Fun

By: Frank Ho | 18/12/2009 | Tutoring
Parents use math marks as a guideline to see if their children’s math have improved, there is nothing wrong with it. My personal experience is that I will feel much relaxed if my tutored student has improved to a stage that math tutoring is fun for both of us. The atmosphere is very relaxed and I can see that the student is enjoying the fun of math learning. The student’s attitude and facial expression are all very relaxed and student's reaction is very exciting and happy.

Why Some Math Formulas Shall be Memorized

By: Frank Ho | 25/11/2009 | Tutoring
Shall math formulas be memorized by students? Many times we hear the answer is either YES or NO and both these answers are absolutely wrong. If the answer is “yes” then it seems to imply that all formulas learned from grade 1 to grade 12 shall be remembered, this is a wrong way of teaching math. In contrast if the answer is “no” then it means students are not required to remember anything and in this case what is the consequence if students do not bother to remember any formulas?

I feel the main reason of improvements was due to different coaching methods used in these two years. Students want to participate BC MATHCOUNTS as individuals may find this paper resourceful since individual participation is allowed in 2002/2003 in BC, Canada .

How To Find A Math Tutor

By: Frank Ho | 23/11/2009 | Tutoring
Let's face it. Math tutor does not need a license to teach (at least in North America). So anyone with some kind of degree can claim to be a well qualified math tutor and the consequence, sometimes, is poor kids suffered since they can not judge if they have been taught in the correct way or not. I have written other articles to point out some problems on how some math tutors have taught math concepts or math algorithms in a very ineffective way.

How to Use Chess to Improve Math

By: Frank Ho | 23/11/2009 | K-12 Education
Some math educators seem to feel math problems can be divided into 2 parts, one is pure computation and the other is problem solving - this claim is evident by examining the textbooks used in schools. When looking at the worksheets offered for elementary students, this seems to be very logic since there is “nothing” could be related to numbers used in the computational problems to enhance thinking ability.

Sudoku Chess Puzzles Spark Children’s Math Interest

By: Frank Ho | 23/11/2009 | Tutoring
I have observed that one of the main reasons that children hate math is they have not mastered the foundation of math, surprisingly the root of problems can be traced to the basics they learned in the elementary grades such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. When elementary students are asked why do we have math?
