Is Private School the Right Choice For You and Your Child?

Every parent has thought about it at some point: "Should I send my child to a private school?"  Some parents go back and forth weighing the pros and cons.  Others talk to friends.  While each type of school has its own advantages and disadvantages, there are some advantages of private schools that you should be sure to take into consideration:

Being smart isn't a social stigma - As almost everyone who went to public schools has noticed, "smart kids are nerds."  For various reasons, in public schools, the smart kids are sometimes labeled as nerds and sometimes picked on.  Children who want to do well academically are also sometimes placed into this group as well.  This can have negative consequences on a child's performance and self-esteem.  At private schools, however, the emphasis is always on academics.  Indeed, children who excel are rewarded and praised by their peers, not ridiculed.

Small classes - Overcrowding at public schools is a well-known problem.  At private schools this is not the case.  Although you should always find out the specifics of whatever private school you are looking at, it is not uncommon to have fewer than 20 students per class (something you almost never find in public schools).

College prep - All colleges like seeing private schools on a student's transcripts.  To make matters even better, some private institutions have close relationships with some colleges, which can help the student have an "inside track" to top universities.

Remember to consider all factors when deciding where to send your child to high school, including everything mentioned in this article.  Also remember to talk to them about their needs and wants as well.
