I think that the most useful major that a young person could choose today for a career in the future would definitely be education. Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the workforce. They are instilling into young people the tools they need to be successful in life. Teachers are encouraging their students to be that lawyer, doctor, astronaut or therapist that they want to be when they grow up. Knowledge is something that no one can take away from you and teachers are the gracious administrators of this powerful gift.
As a teacher your reward will not be your monthly salary. It will be the enormous amount of lives you impact during your teaching career. As a teacher, you will not only be your students' instructor, but their friend, counselor, and cheerleader as well. I chose education as my major because I want to be a part of this priceless experience. I want to be the one that my students can count on when everyone else is calling them a failure. I want to be the one that say YOU CAN when everybody else is telling them YOU CAN'T. After earning my master's degree in elementary education, I plan on teaching for at least twenty-five years and during that span I want every single one of my students that I taught to remember me as the teacher who told them to reach for the stars and that knowledge is everything.
Education is the most useful major a young person can choose because as a teacher you help mold the future. A teacher sets the foundation for all occupations. You are experiencing first hand the development of our future detectives, veterinarians, stock brokers, and psychiatrists. You have a chance to be a role model in someone's life. You can take this profession far beyond feeding students information and plugging in grades. You get to meet new people and can guarantee that every day will not be the same.
Again, I think education is the most useful major that a young person could choose today for a career in the future because teachers nourish the soil from which our future leaders flourish. A world without teachers would be a world without knowledge.
