Youth Group Fundraisers-Cut Down on the Hassle

Every year, various youth organizations start peddling their wares in the hopes of cutting down the cost of camp, football uniforms, band uniforms or the never ending need to just has some money in the coffers for an upcoming special event. If for some reason beyond your control, you suddenly find yourself head a a youth group fundraiser, don't panic.  With a little bit of effort, you can avoid some serious problems down the road.

Here are a few tips that will help you have a successful youth fundraiser:

1. Know your market. Don't try selling high priced wrapping paper to the Dollar Store crowd. You have to know your community in general and think about what others have done in the past.  The economy has tanked and will be stagnate on Main Street for the foreseeable future. People want to donate but simply don't have the money to spend on items that really have no immediate value. Car washes in a high traffic area on Saturdays work fine if the weather holds.  And just as a side note, its the kids' fundraiser. That means once its set up, they do the work.

2. Big productions are a hassle but payoff in the end. Carnivals work well with donated items.  It may take a bit of time on the phone, but you can usually find a place that will donate space for a carnival.  Think Church gym or school or community center.  Send home a note to the kids parents asking them to donate a few liters of soda, candy or whatever you think would be good to giveaway. Cakewalks are always good. Sometimes you can ask big box stores to donate items like little stuffed animals etc.  Get  businesses to donate food and  setups.  Think about free entry with a value added wrist band price to play all the games plus an individual ticket price.  While this type of undertaking takes more work, it usually pays off with more revenue in the end.

3. Set a time for the forms or bills to be turned in at least 5 days before the actual due date. This does cut some time off but if you can't get the forms turned in or bills that need to be accounted for, you will not know how much money was actually made. Especially when it comes to turning in cookie or candy forms, there are always a few stragglers.  Give yourself some wiggle room on this one so you won't stress about next year so much.
