8 DIY Kitchen Renovations You Can Do This Weekend

While renovating a kitchen may seem intimidating, it doesn’t have to be.  Here are 10 quick and easy kitchen renovations that you can complete in a weekend – and that will transform the appearance and function of your kitchen space overnight.

  1. Buy a Kitchen Cart: A kitchen cart is a brilliant item to expand your storage and counter space.  Available in a huge range of sizes, styles and materials, the modern kitchen cart adds ample storage space for pots, pans, paper goods, knives, and more.  In addition, it offers a great place to prepare food, to store a microwave or other small home appliances and even to eat breakfast.  A kitchen cart can make the kitchen look more tidy and it can also add to the kitchen’s overall décor.
  2. Paint, Paint, Paint! Anyone can transform a kitchen with paint.  Go to the paint store and pick out a color that you love.  In one weekend, you can repaint the kitchen by yourself (or with someone you love) and completely change the look of the space.  Today, the hip colors include neutral tones such as tan, brown and off white.  For something more fun, try a light yellow, a pale pink or a sky blue.
  3. Countertops: If you don’t have the time or the money to replace the outdated or worn countertop, why not tile over it?  For an even less-expensive option, re-laminate the counter.  Laminate sheets are available at virtually any home improvement center and they are certainly less expensive than buying new countertops.  They can be installed by one person and they come in a huge range of finishes, colors and styles.
  4. Cabinet Hardware: Few items are easier to include in the diy kitchen renovations than are cabinet hardware pulls and knobs.  Get rid of the old, worn hardware and replace it with new, shiny cabinet hardware.  Pay attention to the existing hardware sizes and purchase your new cabinet hardware in the same size, for easier installation.  Consider purchasing pewter hardware, as it won’t tarnish, it actually looks better with continued use, and it comes in a huge range of fun styles and themes.
  5. Cabinet Doors: While you’re replacing the cabinet hardware, why not spruce up the look of the cabinet doors?  You can certainly install new cabinet doors and drawers, but a cheaper option is to replace just the cabinet door fronts and drawer fronts. An even less expensive home kitchen renovation idea is to replace just the inside panels of the cabinets with lattice door inserts or with clear glass.  These add texture and added style to the overall look of the kitchen.
  6. Appliance Panels: If you don’t have the budget for new appliances, but you want to spruce up the kitchen look, you can always cover your appliances with new appliance panels.  These panels and trim kits are available at most home improvement centers and they come in over 200 different colors and designs.  You’ll find stainless steel, sports motifs, chalkboards and many other playful and cool designs.  If you have mismatching appliances, or ones that look worn, this is a great way to add to the décor and one of the easiest diy kitchen renovations.
  7. Create a Green Kitchen: Any area of the home can be made more inviting with plants.  Simply by going to the nursery this weekend and selecting a number of lovely plants, you’ll welcome greenery and a soft touch into the kitchen.  Place one plant by the kitchen sink and another on a window sill.  Add a plant stand in a corner and enjoy a beautiful plant in this location.
  8. Kitchen Organizers: Even if you don’t have the skill or energy for diy kitchen renovations, anyone can create a tidier kitchen space with kitchen organizers. Add a Lazy Susan to a messy cabinet to expand the usable space.  Purchase pantry shelving or a spice drawer organizer to organize the mess.  Buy some colorful and funky glass jars to store rice, beans, cookies and more on the window sill or on the counter top.  Evaluate your space and see where you could most use better organization.  Then, purchase the key kitchen organizers that will help you to achieve your desired goals.

Keep things simple as you start a kitchen renovation project.  Select one area of the kitchen to renovate this weekend, and then live with the results for a week before making any other changes.  Hopefully, with a few simply diy kitchen renovations, you’ll soon be amazed by the lovely transformation you’ve created, and you’ll admire the money left over in your pocketbook as well!
