Cabinet Hinges: so Many Kitchen Cabinet Door Hinge Styles for Your Kitchen

Cabinet hinges are almost as important as the cabinet doors themselves. With so many options, it's hard to choose which one is right for your kitchen. There are really only three styles, and here is some information that may help clear the waters for you.

I Want It All

Some hinges are completely visible. You see the hinge, the plates, and the screws that mount it. The most common is a colonial style hinge seen in the accompanying picture. These hinges generally require the installation of catch mechanisms as well, which can be either the “latch-with-roller” type or magnet style.

Gimme an Order of Large Hinge, But Easy on the Plates

As you might have guessed, this style of hinge is partially visible. You can see what's mounted on the cabinet frame, but the door piece is hidden inside the door. These come in an array of colors and finishes. There are also variations in style, depending on which manufacturer's products you're looking at. Many semi-visible style hinges also require catches to be installed; you need to check before buying the hinges if catches are necessary or not.

Now You See It...

The third style of hinge is, of course, hidden. Generally the door mount is large and round, and mounts inside of a bore in the back of the door. The other side mounts to the frame, also on the inside out of sight.

Certain models of these style hinges are, by far, the easiest to finagle once their installed. They have adjustments in several different directions, as opposed to their completely visible and semi-visible counterparts.

Most concealed hinges are the self closing kind. Once you get the door to a certain point, the hinges will take over. Unlike soft close drawers though, it is usually still very possible to slam your cabinet doors, so be careful.

In the end, what you have for cabinets may decide what you get for hinges.Rustic style kitchens may clamor for fully exposed, and a busy (distressed) finish may look best with concealed hinges. It might just end up being somewhere in the middle.
