We’ve heard the news about toxins in plastics. Studies have shown that there are a variety of possible heath threats linked to plastics. We know it’s harmful to the environment, so why take a chance with our bodies. As I always say, “Going green starts at home”. So I’d like to help you Green Your Kitchen by removing toxic plastics and learning to choose safer ones for your home.
Lazy Susan -ha! To lazy to organize it-I was! But alas , I have tackled the chore and am feeling greener for it!
Let’s start with plastics that contain bisphenol-A, commonly called BPA. BPA contains estrogen-like properties and is a known endocrine distruptor. Numerous animal studies jave linked BPA to cancer, infertility, obesity and early puberty. Furthermore a study conducted by the Center For Disease Control found the chemical in 93% of people they tested! Ready to throw it out yet?
Heating foods in these types of plastics increases the amount of chemicals that leach into food. How about now?
So, I’ve convinced you to send your plastic packing, but how do you know which ones to chuck? Start with plastic #7. Most are polycarbonate which contains BPA. Then #6 or PS (polystyrene) styrofoam. And # 3 or PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Never heat food in these types of containers, especially any that are cracked or damaged. Unfortunately these types of plastics are not recyclable in Monroe County. Try to re-purpose them for non-food use or throw them away.
Though I recommend storing and heating food in glass containers whenever possible, I know that old habits die hard. So try looking for safer plastics like numbers 1,2,4, and 5. And again, try not to reheat in plastic whenever possible.
Got holiday leftovers to send home with your guests? Send them with a keepsake glass dish covered in aluminuin foil (which can be recycled in the bin). Check out your local thrift shop for interesting glass bowls and dishes on the cheap.
Tomorrow on www.homeandyardradio.com with the Fixie Chick: 8 ways to save water without spending a dime! Saturday at 10:00 am on 950 am.
Have fun greening your kitchen!

How To Reduce Your Home Refrigerator Power Consumption
By: Will Yap | 23/12/2009Where does most of the energy go? The main consumption of energy goes to the heating and air conditioning unit. Next, it is the home refrigerator which is consuming the most power. Our fridge is left running all the time. We do not switch it off unless for servicing or repair works. To keep the fridge cold, a lot of power is used to run the compressor motor. Therefore, any measure we take to increase the efficiency of the refrigerator will reduce our monthly utility bill substantially.
