Hot Summer Trend: Outdoor Kitchens
A homeowner’s trend that is expected to explode even further this summer is the upscale outdoor kitchen, complete with fitted appliances, chandeliers, wine coolers and beer taps. It is totally awesome that we are finally taking the mundane chore of dinner to the great outdoors and outfitting our lawns with stunning outdoor luxury kitchens that take the ordinary out of everyday meals.
According to the 2006 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey, there was a drastic increase in outdoor living spaces added to homes all across the nation. Homeowners are now spending more time, attention and money on the upscale landscaping and exterior spaces of their homes. One of the most interesting aspects of the survey was that 2/3rds of the architects polled stated that clients wanted an outdoor kitchen.
One of the nice things about outdoor living spaces is that they can be completed with a reserved or unlimited budget, and you can inject more of your personality in your outdoor décor. Some outdoor kitchens boast granite countertops, dishwashers and a full pantry area. Just remember to have fun with it and make it a space that you, your family and your guests can kick back and enjoy.
Another excellent addition to an outdoor high end kitchen area is a huge hearth. Ready-made models which are made of real brick and stone and massive in size are available for purchase. If you live in a colder climate, be sure to include a few freestanding propane patio heaters to keep you warm on chilly evenings and add some character and charm to your outdoor space with copper outdoor fire pits, and some lovely copper tiki torch lamps.
Large or compact, minimal or luxurious, one of the best aspects of designing an outdoor kitchen is that unlike a room in your home, you can make this a work in progress and add to it as your budget allows. One of the things you should consider when planning your outdoor kitchen, aside from the built-in appliances, sink, beer tap, warming drawer and tiled countertops is whether or not to cover the area with an arbor or roof. If you live in an area known for rain or bad weather, a covered area allows you to enjoy your outdoor kitchen no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. If you do decide to include a roof, just be sure not to enclose it completely or you will lose the feel and ambiance of the outdoor open air kitchen feel.
Choose dining furniture that will endure the elements and are ultra comfortable, so that everyone that sits outside will be inclined to talk the night away. As a final thought when you are designing a fabulous outdoor kitchen area, don’t forget about storage, especially if your area is open air and not covered. You will be glad that you built a small cabana or installed a large deck bench with storage that will protect cushions and accessories when they are not being used.
