There are a myriad of different things to keep in mind when selecting a new kitchen sink including the shape, color, and how the sink will be mounted. One of the most important considerations though is the material, since it should coordinate with and complement the countertops.
The most common materials used in kitchen sink faucets are stainless steel, solid-surface materials, acrylic, and porcelain.
Stainless Steel
Arguably the most popular kitchen sink material, stainless steel is easy to install and clean. Also adding to its popularity is its price tag – stainless steel sinks come in a wide variety of prices. However, stainless steel can scratch easily and dent if a heavy object (such as a cast iron pan) is dropped on it. The thickness of the stainless steel (known as the gauge) determines the durability of the material. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the material, which indicates a more durable stainless steel.
Solid-Surface Materials
Also called composites, solid-surface materials are available in a number of different colors, which coordinate with most countertops. Heat and stain resistant, these materials aren’t entirely scratch-proof but most can be buffed out.
Acrylic
While not as heat-resistant as other materials, acrylic is stain-resistant and has various germ-fighting properties integrated into it.
Porcelain
Sinks made out of porcelain generally have a porcelain coating over a base of metal. While porcelain sinks generally have an aesthetic appeal, stains can be difficult to remove and the porcelain can chip if heavy items or metal pans are dropped in them.
